Baofeng HT Digirig Cables Set -> DigiRig Lite

Just have a question about the ability to use the DigiRig Lite with the Baofeng Cables I am connecting (or attempting to us this combination) to connect to a UV-17R. People on the other side can hear me and PTT is triggered however I can’t hear them responding back.

Please Advise

P.S. I did notice that this radio isn’t specifically mentioned as compatible with the cable and I have noticed that those cables aren’t listed as compatible with the DigiRig Lite specifically

The audio cable is compatible with Digirig Mobile 1.6 or later in any configuration and other models of Digirig interface.

so there’s potentially a problem on a couple of the connections that I’m using.

Worth also noting that I have tested this same combination using radiomail with with essentially the same result.

the digirig cable will work with the lite version fine business.
rule of thumb, if the radio in question has a K1 spk/mic connection, like the UV-5R, then the basic audio in/out +ptt functions will work with the cable listed as UV-5R compatible

of course only the audio cable will work as the lite has no serial port so in this case, the ‘programming’ cable bundled with the uv-5r set is not used and will do nothing with the lite version of digirig products.

now, as to hearing other stations, if the distant station is really hearing your tx (audible noise/data sounds), you should be good to go.

i would open the squelch on the radio, set the volume to about 2/3 dial (may need to adjust up or down but 2/3 is a good starting point.

lastly and really most important:
baofeng and baofeng like radios usually come with a setting enabled that must be disabled/turned off.

it is called, in the menu, STE
squelch tail elimination.
what this does is; the radio will KEEP THE TX ‘ON’ for a bit after the software lets go of the ptt after tx.

the distant station, upon hearing no more data, sends a reply but the local station is still in tx mode, not rx mode and never hears the header of the reply packet.

so, dig into the radio menu and look for STE or on other radios called squelch tail eliminiation and turn it off.

good luck

Was able to find that the issue was related to the fact of how I was detecting the SQL_DET in correctly for SVXLink

Old Value:

SQL_DET=CTCSS

New Value

SQL_DET=VOX

Old Value:

VOX_THRESH=1000

Old Value:

VOX_THRESH=650

I also changed:

  • “SQL_HANGTIME” from 2000 to 2500 (or 2.5 seconds)
  • “VOX_FILTER_DEPTH” from 20 to 18

Reference: SVXLINK.CONF
in addition I found that the value for VOX_THRESH was a bit off.
