Trying to set up a ROIP gateway using an Android phone running Mumla (Mumble) and a baofeng DM32.
trying a Btech APRS cable as the connection from the radio to phone but sometimes I have distortion and feedback issues despite playing with the settings
Was wondering if a digi rig with any particular cables may be able to improve phone to radio and radio to phone transmissions.
Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
the digirig lite is a good choice for ht setup.
it is audio only (no serial port) and has PTT via GPIO (cm108/ra-board) or its built in vox.
the problems you’re having could be due to the cable you have but it’s worth looking at what your antenna setup is as well as how you ‘lay out’ the chain of smartphone - cable - radio.
very easy to introduce rfi into the chain and cause the problems you’re having.
good luck

Are you saying if I got a bunch of chokes nearby, a potential cheap fix would be to add some to the cable?
possibly.
the aprs/baofeng/k1 cable has no real cmc so adding a choking system can only help.
high percentage braid/shield coax to a ground plane style antenna, located away from the radio/interface, is always my first recommendation when troubleshooting these types of symptoms.
(the ht antenna uses the body of the radio as a groundplane/counterpoise to the whip. anything ‘plugged into’ the radio that contacts chassis ground, becomes a part of this and can/will carry common mode current)
about ferrite chokes on cables specifically, remember, snap on chokes are about 20% as effective as passing the cable through a core multiple times if that option is available.
i’m not trying to steer you away from a digirig product, as i said, the digirig lite, would be my pick every time for your setup, just making sure i don’t mislead you if the problem stems from something else.
good luck
