I just received my Digirig(RS232) with DB-9 connector package. After install the driver it present itself as COM6 and USB sound card. I set the TS-570D in 96-1(9600baud/1stop bit) mode, and the same in WSJT-X, but it returns “connection timeout”.
I can get the audio to work(for some reason it only passes sound around ~1kHz but that’s another issue). I can trigger PTT with RTS signal on COM6. It just the CAT control not responsive, like it’s not there.
One thing I notice is, everytime it boot up, during the first connection for a brief moment the radio would display that it was connected. But then that indicator disappointed disappeared and the PC would throwing out the timeout error.
Unfortunately it has nothing to do with physical connection.
As many posts pointed out, TS-570D relied on hardware RTS/CTS flow control, which digirig does not supported(the RTS is being used as PTT control). It might also need the DTR PIN on high.
As a result, I have to buy a dedicated RS232 adapter along with RS232 gender converter(NOT null-modem) to get the CAT control to work.
Now I’m having a different problem. The audio level is too low, which I’m going to discuss in a separate thread
Still, after so many posts reporting issues with TS-570D’s CAT control. I hope digirig can at least put a warning on the Kenwood DB9 cable’s product page
It’s an old rig that Kenwood stop supporting long time ago, not to mention there is nothing wrong with the rig. It’s just using an older method for Serial communication that is perfectly in compliance with the RS232 standard.
Digirig on the other hand, used the cut down version of RS232, which is understandable because most modem rig doesn’t require the full version of RS232 anymore. However since it’s not technically in full compliance with the RS232 standard, it should be Digirig’s responsibility to warn the customer.
Good day Snowboy, I suggest that you use an additional USB to serial converter for CAT , you cannot get a stable CAT control with the TS570D without flow control and high speed, try 57600 with RTS handshake and CTS low. Depending on the type of serial coverter you may or may not need a nul modem cable (rx and tx swapped) my setup needed a straight male to male 9pin cable pins 2-2, 3-3. 5-5, 7-7 and 8-8.
My TS-570D Digirig interface (RS-232 configuration) works great. No handshake lines are used. WSJT-X settings are COM20, 57600-8-1-N, PTT method has RTS checked, Mode - USB, Spilt - None. Make sure your TS-570 comm settings match. Menu #35. Check your computer comm port settings to match. Used Control Panel sound settings for playback (speakers) set to 20, recording (mic) set to 40. Hope this helps.
No volume issues. Just sometimes I need to readjust the SOUND settings slightly in Windows when I go between APPs - WSJT-X, FLdigi, and JS8Call. Otherwise all ok. I had trouble with my TS-570 originally it would lose CTRL. I “think” there may be a race condition in the TS-570 comm circuity when you don’t use handshake lines. So setting the baud to 57600 seemed to correct the problem. I’ve had it running all day, many days with no problem after changing the baud to 57600.
I just tried the same setting as yours, nope, not working. It did the same as before: the CTRL icon show up briefly and then dead, no responses anymore. Reboot the rig and switch back to my standard RS232 with 57600 it communicate without any issue.
It is really intriguing. I do see reports like yours said their rig is working fine with digirig’s COM, maybe buggy but works fine. But there are also cases like mine that no matter how I adjust the setting it just wouldn’t work.
I also see some TS-570D’s menu item goes up to 50, where mine only goes to 46.
It there a firmware update that I’m not aware? Or it is a hardware revisions?
By the way, just to be clear, you are able to output full 100w with digirig, right?
Are you sure that you have an Digirig “RS-232” configuration and not a “default logic” configuration for your TS-570D? I have 51 menu #s as per the manual. Menu 32 is OFF, 33 is 2, 34 is 4, 35 is 576-1. I currently have the TX RF power set to 10 Watts via the PWR button on the front panel, but I can adjust it up to 100 W with the orange MENU/CH dial. I don’t think the Digirig can adjust TX RF power? I don’t know about any firmware versions. Hope this helps…if you want to chat you can email me at danocox860@cox.net and we can try a phone call.
It’s RS232, if not, the radio wouldn’t show the “CTRL” icon briefly(I even open the digirig and check inside to make sure the soldering is correct). I also tried to send command to the radio manually via the COM port, the radio actually did received the command of changing the frequency, it just never reply back.
Now I think I’m pretty sure why there are such difference. You have TS-570D(G) which is an updated version of TS-570D. A quick google shows that Kenwood offer TS-570D’s owner to upgrade their radio to TS-570D(G) between 2000-2007, the cost was $150 and you would need to ship the radio to their service center.
I suspect they fix many issues that TS-570D had with that upgrade.
