CP2102N driver shows "needs further installation"

Trying to get a digirig ver 1.9 working with my Kenwood TM-V708 for Winlink. I am not getting any receive audio and think it’s a driver issue. Transmit seems to work just fine (PTT works) and I hear TX audio monitoring on another radio. Cables and digirig both check good using the posted troubleshooting instructions. I’ve downloaded the latest “universal” driver from the Silabs website but when I check properties/events in device manager, I see words that say “Device USB\VID_10C4&PID_EA60\0479cae51587ed119e7432d7a603910e requires further installation.” I also have a digirig ver 1.10 that shows the same message when plugged into a USB port. In the “General” tab under Properties, it says the device is working normally on both devices. The date of the driver from Silabs is 11/13/2024 and is version 11.4.0.393. What am I doing wrong? They claim this is the latest universal driver.

Congratulations on getting PTT working. Since the problem is with receive audio, can you post settings from Vara FM modem or soundmodem for Settings → Soundcard ? You must select the Digirig USB PnP speaker and microphone devices.

There is also a guide Troubleshooting Digital Modes – digirig
which takes a step-by-step approach to isolate and solve each problem.

Okay, problem solved. Apparently, I was selecting the wrong USB Audio Device in the Soundcard menu in Winlink. Thanks for suggesting I check that. Now, I have a new problem… I don’t seem to have enough audio output (drive level) on TX to get a green indication from the gateway in Autotune. Audio output level on computer is 100 and drive level in VARA FM is 0db. Autotune says I need more audio… I am set to WIDE and using 9600 baud connection, which I know requires more audio than the typical connections for 1200 baud. I don’t see any other options for boosting the TX audio level.

I have made successful connections many times when Autotune does not qualify the connection and suggests more audio level. Here’s what I do:

  1. Reduce the playback audio level to 50%
  2. Use the Ping command to test the closest possible RMS station
  3. The connection may succeed and you can send traffic.
  4. If the connection fails, increase the playback audio level by 5% steps until you have success.
  5. If this still fails, there may be local noise, insufficient TX carrier power, or insufficient antenna gain.

Good luck.

I might be stating the obvious…

The Windows Mixer audio levels also have an impact on the transmit and receive audio, so you may have to adjust the audio levels there, then in Winlink modem.

Good luck,

Consider monitoring the audio level with another radio as a sanity check, but back off on the TX power to avoid overloading the RX radio.

I think you are very close to success.
