Digirig audio connection problem

I’ve had the digirig dr 891 (with ft 891) for about 4 months now, everything was working great up until recently the received audio to wsjtx seems to drop out. Everything else (cat control, tx) continues to work fine but nothing is being decoded and or showing up in the waterfall.

If I wiggle around just the usb cable sometimes I can get the audio to come through. I have tried multiple different USB cables all have the same problem. The input ports on my mac I have ruled out as being an issue. I’ve tried USB cables with and without ferrite chokes so I think I’ve ruled out an RF issue. Im afraid the USB port on the digirig has an issue. Anyone else run into this problem?

Image shows the waterfall in WSJTX with me wiggling around the Digirig near the USB C input port to the Digirig. You can see the signal come through then drop out.

If USB disconnects or drops out due to RFI you’ll get instant error message about sound card and serial port not communicating. The CAT is working and the waterfall populates with low level audio so USB should be fine.

If you are on Windows, try patching trough Digirig’s input audio to the computer’s speakers using “listen” checkbox in the recording device settings inside of the Control Panel. This way you can hear what WSJT-X hears.

Im on mac, I was able to patch the input audio to the speakers and also a recording on the mac. I recorded for a minute while I fiddled around with the connections into the Digirig (little wiggling and turning). You can hear the signal come in when it does I stopped fiddling around with the connections.

When the audio came in consistently I then lowered the RF gain on the radio and can see that reflected in the audio recoding.

I think I narrowed it down the the audio cable at the connection to the digirig. See attached video the audio is what my computer hears.

Is it possible to just order a single new audio cable? I don’t see any damage to the cable, not sure why it would suddenly start having a problem like this

You can confirm the issue with the cable by checking its continuity against the published schematic. What I see in the video can also indicate the issue with the black socket’s connection to the board. Either way, please shoot a service request via the website providing your order info and we’ll get it sorted out.
