Digirig Lite and Anytone 878 ++ and Radio Mail

I just picked up a Digi Rig Lite today. I am trying to connect using iOS software of Radio Mail.

I am trying to connect my Anytone 878 to VARA FM but I cant seem to transmit.

Also tried it and no luck with my Baofeng. I’m sure I’m missing a simple setting

Any Advice

PS heck I would be happy to connect to Packet VHF

Tried again today with Baofeng HT and no luck. Cannot get it to transmite at all on either Packet or VARA Fm.

Is there set up instructions for VARA FM and Radio Mail???

packet IS built into radiomail (i’m not an ios user but do know that one :))
vara is NOT built into radiomail. radiomail will use a network connection to your computer that is capable of running a windows binary, varafm/hf/sat, that is connected to a radio.
(this is the same behavior as the comparable app on android phones, WoAD)

so you are limited to packet when using a phone+interface+radio.
the settings you’re looking for concern the interface.

digirig is not a tnc so be sure to choose ‘audio’ for the interface.
also, ptt method choices for the lite are:
GPIO or VOX (this means vox on the digirig, you don’t turn on vox on the radio itself)

hope this gets you pointed in the right direction
good luck

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll see what I can find

Don’t use a Baofeng until you have it figured out. They are very tough to get the audio set correctly and some Baofeng radios just don’t work at all.

The 878 is solid though.

Don’t worry already planning on 878

Here’s my instructions for my Alinco, should be similar on the Anytone…

Thank you very much. I’ve been through every setting I believe will help. Clearly I am missing something.

Two things I wonder might be effecting it. I am using an adapter for the USB C connection to work

Also I noticed the PWR and PTT lights on Digirig, but they are not coming on at all

Going crazy trying to figure what step I am missing

Brian.

You’re using an adapter? Meaning your iPhone has a lightning port instead of USB-C?

This is correct. Same for both iPhone and iPad

Gotcha. I think in that case you’re not supposed to use the DigiRig Lite, just the VOX cable. See this page…

Specifically note this line…

Which One Should I Get?

If your device has a USB-C connector, choose the DigiRig Lite. This ensures the PTT control uses active circuitry, as it can be powered by USB.

For older devices with a lightning connector, use the DigiRig VOX PTT cable. You’ll also need a lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter from Apple.

So if I’m reading this correctly I should skip the Digirig Lite and just use a lighting 3.5mm adapter?

Most of the article was way over my head

That’s my understanding. I have a USB-C iPhone so I can’t speak from experience. It’s also probably important to get one that is quality and that has the right pinout. Here’s the DigiRig product to get…

He does say that it’s experimental, so keep that in mind.

That’s a bummer. However I am sure I can use it for other things. Wish something was said when I got it

Just my thought. If the lights are not coming on the digirig I might suspect an incorrect cable ot port bring used.

Also, if and when you do succeed please document the successful connection and configuration for all of us baofeng users.

Will do Promise it’s something simple I missed

Got the 3.5 mm plug adapter for iPhone and no luck at all. Still no power lights on DigiRig lite. Still going to keep trying to figure it out.

Open to any and all suggestions

Tonight I changed things up and ran the DigiRig Lite from my Icom 2300H to my PC. Unlike when I was using the iPhone to Anytone 878 UV ++ the Digirig lite got power and performance was perfect.

Which brings up a new question; Can I leave the DigiRig lite plugged into the Icom 2300H and PC 24/7? I only use the IC-2300H when doing Winlink. The PC is on 24/7

As for the iPhone and no power on the DigiRig Lite I have one more trick to try. The USB-C to Apple Thunderbolt adapter was purchased at a hamfest for a too good to be true price. It’s possible the adapter is bad. I plan to visit my local Apple Store and pick up a Apple official one and try again

Fingers crossed

Re. leaving the Digirig Lite plugged: yes, these are used for digipeaters all the time so no issue there.
