Digirig Mobile Direwolf Audio Troubleshooting (send but no receive?)

Hello there,

I’ve been trying to get Direwolf working but have hit a wall. I’m using a couple Baofengs, Digirig Mobile, and Linux (and tried Windows). I have been able to send a beacon successfully to aprs.fi so I know that PTT and audio is working to some degree but I have not been able to receive any packets.

Things I’ve tried:

  1. Use Audacity to record sound from the radio through Digirig. This works and helped me adjust the sounds so it’s not clipping so much. It removed a lot of the scratchiness from the audio.
  2. I tried using the setup on a Ubuntu 24.04 and 22.04 laptops
  3. IRemoved pipewire and tried pulse audio
  4. Tried everything on a Windows desktop
  5. Tried on a raspberry pi
  6. Cut the ATT trace to see if that would make a difference

Regarding the “audio statistics” produced by Direwolf, what should one expect as results? I typically see zero but then I see a 50-60 reading making me think something is coming in.

ADEVICE0: Sample rate approx. 44.1 k, 0 errors, receive audio level CH0 0
ADEVICE0: Sample rate approx. 44.0 k, 0 errors, receive audio level CH0 0

I’ve searched and tried as much as I can but have hit a wall. Are there any ideas that could help me troubleshoot this? Anything could be helpful!

Cheers,

Tom

PS. My plan is to try and teach myself packet radio to play a MUD over telnet over radio… not really sure why except “because” lol

i also play MUDs and other telnet stuff via packet radio.

my ‘gateway’ is my bpq32 node that is using soundmodem for packet access.

sorry i can’t help with direwolf/linux
(i tried a linux setup with jnos and also native stack without success)

bpq32 is OVERKILL for a packet to telnet gateway BUT it works 100%
bpq32 can be run without the BBS function and without the CHAT function to keep it simple.

soundmodem is the softwareTNC i use for ax.25 packet and bqp32 interfaces well with it.
vara-fm also runs on that same radio port and i can use vara-fm for faster speeds to telnet into a MUD, even my own ‘testing MUD’

good luck

Hi kb0wlf,

Thanks so much for sharing your project, you’ve given me tons of ideas! I’m going to give softmodem a try and see if I can make some progress… at least rule out some things if it works. There’s so much to learn which makes this all really exciting… knowing that it can be done gives me confidence.

My hope is to build a self-contained (solar/battery) VHF/raspberry pi , stick it up on top of a a tall tree, and backhaul it with wifi to the house network and connect to my stuff. Then I can MUD on the farm in the back 9’s lol.

Cheers,

Tom
