Digirig Mobile with Baofeng cable using Winlink Express and Vara FM - AutoTune gives "No Signal"

I have a TIDRadio TD-H3, the Baofeng cable and the Digirig Mobile.
When I set up the Digirig in Windows like this:
(I couldn’t upload more than 4 screen shots so i’m describing them)

The digirig speaker set with level 20 and all enhancements turned off.

and for the microphone: Level set to 20, AGC turned off and listen turned off.

THEN - In Vara FM, Soundcard setup - I have selected the DigiRig for both input and output.

(The radio is tuned to our local digipeater, right power, right bandwidth and zero squelch, audio input level is good (adjusted from radio volume dial)) – but when I click on AutoTune and then click the “plug”, it sends X of 10…

But then it waits for response but reports “No Signal”.

I do NOT have a second radio that I could use to “listen in” with during the tuning.

I have sent Winlink messages using my Icom 7300 and Vara HF but would like to be able to communicate on 2m/70cm if conditions are poor on HF.

(I started asking about this in the comments of your YouTube video titled “Digirig setup for VaraFM with HT”)

Do you have any suggestions on what to try? Any and all help is appreciated!

I hope this gives a complete picture… Thanks!

Does the radio key up during the transmit cycles?
Do you hear other stations’ traffic on the frequency when you are monitoring it?

For example of VaraFM setup, please check:

i don’t think you’ll be able to connect with ea5hvk

try an active vara station within reach of your vhf setup.

does your local ‘digipeater’ repeat vara traffic or only packet?
the auto tune requires a station to station connection, otherwise the digipeater would effect the levels

good luck

Hmm sometimes - it triggers the PTT and sometimes it doesn’t?! I was toggling the “Tune” button and suddenly - the PTT got stuck in transmit mode!? I had to unplug the USB for it to release? I have the PTT set for the proper com port and CTS… Isn’t this what it is supposed to be set like?

Listen to what @webmonkey has to say.

In the meantime, in my experience, RF can cause PTT lockup, and moving the antenna up and away from the handset fixes that. I also use RF beads/chokes on the USB and feedline.

You are getting closer.

i agree

stuck ptt, especially with an ht, is usually rf in the usb.

that varies greatly from computer to computer.
i’ve got a solid setup that hates a windows tablet pc but never hiccups on the evolve maestro.
