DR-891 no sound from computer

Hi,

I am using the DR-891 to connect my Yaesu FT-891 to my laptop.

I am using the usb cable and cat cable from digirig. I can receive signals no problem and decode them, however currently I am unable to transmit through the computer/digirig.

Every time WSJT-X tries to transmit I get a rig error. Furthermore with the help of Ham Radio Deluxe I tried to see what happens when I transmit on SSB. The results of that experiment are that every time I press the PTT on the mic and speak, Ham Radio Deluxe loses connection to my transceiver.

Also, I tried the above on my desktop computer which did not have any of the above programs before. With no difference.

According to the troubleshooting guide I plugged two (one at the time) 3.5mm stereo headphones into Digirig’s audio socket, to test if there is audio from the computer. I heard nothing.

Below are my transceiver settings:

Menu 05-06 CAT RATE 9600
Menu 05-07 CAT TOT 1000
Menu 05-08 CAT RTS DISABLE
Menu 07-12 PC KEYING OFF
Menu 08-01 DATA MODE OTHERS
Menu 08-05 DATA LCUT FREQ OFF
Menu 08-07 DATA HCUT FREQ OFF
Menu 08-09 DATA IN SELECT REAR
Menu 08-10 DATA PTT SELECT DAKY
Menu 08-11 DATA OUT LEVEL 50
Menu 08-12 DATA BFO USB
Menu 16-01 HF SSB PWR 5W
Menu 16-02 HF AM PWR 5W
Menu 16-03 HF PWR 5W
Menu 16-14 DATA DATA GAIN 50

Any thoughts on where to go from here?

Thanks , SV2TNG

And WSJT-X:

It’s RFI. You might want to add a ferrite choke on the feedline.
For the troubleshooting purposes try reducing TX power to a minimum value and/or use a dummy load. This should stop kicking out the USB connection.

Hi, I tried the steps I described above with only 5 W. I have been using the digirig for months with my current setup, before this issue occurred.

Let’s try using Digirig for audio while bypassing it for CAT control. Please use a direct USB connection between the radio and computer. Do you still get rig error on transmit?

Hi, just tested it. No I don’t get any rig errors on either of the programs.

Thanks for the info.
Just to clarify, prior to transmitting are you able to use CAT for switching the bands and syncing the VFO between the computer and radio?

Yes, rig control works correctly.

OK, I did a couple more tests using only 5W. Even when bypassing digirig for cat control, sometimes it works ok and others I get rig errors. Could it be RFI as you mentioned previously?

Yes, it’s a good possibility when things are working alright up to the moment when you try to transmit. Do you have a dummy load to see if error goes away with it connected?

Not at this moment. I bought one and I am waiting for it to arrive.

The ferrites I bought probably solved my issue. Tested with dummy load and all is well. I even did a few QSO’s via FT8. Time will tell.
