FLGDIGI + DigiRig Lite: PTT Settings?

Trying to configure FLDigi with my Digirig Lite. I have successfully configured WinLink / VARA-FM using the PTT > RA-Board-1 setting. (This works with both my Baofeng UV-5RM Plus AND my Icom ID-50.) I can’t find a similar option in the FLDigi Configure menus - the only menu option is a choice of COM Ports, but (as we know) the DigiRig Lite doesn’t open COM Ports.

In Fldigi: Configure > Config Dialog > Rig Control > C-Media PTT

  • Check the Use C-Media PTT box
  • Select C-Media-A (could also be C-Media-B) in the C-Media device dropdown
  • Select GPIO-3 in the GPIO line dropdown
  • Click the Select button
  • Click the TEST button to verify PTT works
  • Click Save, then Close

I have 2 digirig 1.9 boxes, one RS-232, and the other TTL, working with Windows 10 and fldigi. I’ve been testing them by connecting one, testing a few radios for send and receive, connecting the next digirig, same tests. Now comes the Lite.

When I connect the Lite, however, I get a red and a green LED, both sort of faint.

I configured fldigi as above, disabling the options I chose for digirig 1.9.

With the LEDs constantly on, when I test the GPIO-3 setup, the red LED flashes more brightly for a few seconds.

Once, the red LED went out, but I have no idea why.

When I hit Tune in fldigi, I get nothing. The faint red and green LED displays. No PTT.

Windows Device Manager thinks it is all installed correctly, and the flashing of the red LED seems to agree.

Ideas on what to check next?

edit 20260307a: This morn I decided to gamble on a few things. A night’s rest works wonders. First, I wondered if just rebooting fixed anything. Nope.

Then I randomly decided to turn on the radio. Why was it off last night? Because I am accustomed to testing interfaces without transmitting, and the safest approach IMO is to have the radio off. I do this all the time with other interfaces. Of course, I could have used a dummy load, but I don’t have one on a switch for VHF (only HF), and didn’t want to replace antenna with a dummy load. And this is the first time I recall an interface not working unless the radio was turned on.

However, turning the radio ON turned the dim red LED OFF. On my way, then.

Was able to transmit and receive using Kenwood TH-F6 & TH-D72 and fldigi 4.2.06.

It /seems/ that I must [disable|confirm disabled] the Rig Control>Hardware PTT controls, then [enable|confirm enabled] the C-Media PTT PTT controls, including Select and Test. Then it all worked. It /seemed/ that if I had left the Rig Control>Hardware PTT controls AND/OR actually initialized them, then fldigi either got confused OR made Rig Control>Hardware PTT a higher priority, because once I did that fldigi+Lite didna work again until fldigi reboot.

I then confirmed that turning the radio on and off turned the LED dim off and on, respectively. Also, once the link was established, I could then leave the radio off and hit Tune to turn the red LED bright red. With the radio off, there was no indication that PTT was triggered, but I’ll accept that it was. Unfortunately, this is an empty test, because I really needed the Lite to work last night with the radio off. HOWSOMEVER, I finally learned that I could disconnect the HT, and test the Lite. With the radio turned off, the dim red LED went dark, and Tune toggled it. YMMV. I think that reading all that I have written here shows that the Lite works fine with the HTs tested (Kenwood, Baofeng, BTECH), as long as you are careful with fldigi config.
