Previously working setup (FT-891,DR-891 w/OEM Digirig cables (DR-891 USB and DR-891 audio (black),WINLINK, computer-GMKtec NUC) now inoperable. Radio keys up on its own and won’t stop until DR-891 unplugged. Issues started with adding Digirig mobile for FM ops. COM port issues galore. Uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted repeatedly and went solely with HF mode after FM issues. Now, however, COM port assignments (Radio Control Port, PTT Port) not working as previously installed. Combinations of COM 5 for both RCP and PTT and RTS/no RTS not working. Would like to recover as hurricane season has started here in Hawaii.

it’s unlikely the comports #s, of the dr-891 setup, were changed by adding a digirig mobile but they could have if the dr-891 was plugged into a different usb port.
this would also result in a ‘new’ usb audio device entry
that would cause a new set of #s for your ft-891
from there, it’s a matter of making sure all software is pointing to the right digirig plugged into the right radio with the right cable in the right jack

Thanks for the response. I’m using Win11. Normally it’s COM4 for enhanced and COM3 for Standard. Turned on “show hidden devices” when I connected/disconnected the Digirig Mobile (COM6), and shortly after that started having issues. Working on getting the HF back first. And yes,I get it about the “right item,right place”.
As @webmonkey suggested, let’s review the COM port number assignments.
Please share the screenshots of the ports group in the device manager with:
- only DR-891/FT-891 connected,
- only Digirig Mobile connected and
- with both connected.

My FT-891 is headed to YAESU for a separate issue, so I don’t have any screen caps or photos for you. I do have the screen caps of the TIDRADIO TD-H3 attempts–all failed. At rest, I can get the VU meter to approx -13dB to -11dB as your video states,but on transmit, the needle starts in the red, and then falls back. That happens with both the Mobile and the DR-891.
Not sure how any of this happened, both HF and FM were working fine;. It wasn’t until I added VARA FM and pointed the
executable (“VARA”) to the wrong folder. Since then, neither have worked. I’ve spent hours trying to figure it out, uninstalling/reinstalling. Not working.
In the meantime,I’ve attempted to get VARA FM working with my TIDRADIO TD-H3. It previously worked, now it doesn’t.
I’m under the impression that since the audio is coming in hot, so I broke the tab to address the attenuation as you mentioned in a previous post–no change to the situation. So if that screwed things up some more, so be it. If it has to go to the trash, I’m fine with it.
As far as the COM port questions, I’ve applied those questions to the TIDRADIO situation. Regardless of combination of factors, it always shows COM3 (see attachment). As far as the VARA setup, its COM3 and RTS (using RTS and DTR puts the radio into protracted transmit and the TD-H3 gets hot quick).
It’s unfortunate, but it started out great. Spending too much time on this, and have to get to the decision point whether to pursue data. Reinstalled Win 11 on both of my computers just to cover my bases; seems like a stretch that both Digirig Mobile AND Digirig DR-891 have failed.

If there is any doubt about the Digirig hardware, you are welcome to send it in for service. I’ll be closing for the summer break until late July though. You can also check with your local club, certainly somebody had Digirig there and you can try yours in their setup.
Replaced TD-H3 with Baofeng BF-F8HP—Issue immediately resolved; able to use Winlink/Digirig Mobile/Vara FM.
