FT70D, and DR Mobile settings

Rig: FT70D
Power: 5 watts
Antenna: Signal Stick, outside 1/2 l 2m.
Modem: DR Mobile (Full)
Mode: Winlink Vara FM
Digipeater location: 5 miles from QTH

Works well with TFM6000 rig.

Got cable for the FT70D. Got it pulled in the right way. It is triggering transmit: can hear it on another rig. The green receive light comes on. Did the tune test on Vara FM, and the digi did not respond back.

Suggestions?

I think you are an experienced operator and you will probably solve this quickly on your own. Since you asked for suggestions:

  1. check squelch set 0
  2. set tail squelch off
  3. jpole antenna remote and elevated, 1/4 wave magmount in vehicle, 1/4 wave remote and elevated.
  4. Ferrite beads on the USB and antenna leadline.
  5. Check the VU meter is in the “green” ideally 50% level.
  6. Sometimes Vara FM will work even though Test fails.

I think the signal stick is engineered for the handset being held by the operator.

I think you know the ins-and-outs of VaraFm and you will succeed quickly.
