FT891 Digirig Android Cellphone

Hi guys. I am thinking about to buy the digirig. But before I buy it I would like to ask a question:
I am planning to use this digirig for POTA activities.
Therefore I use the the Yaesu FT-891 and would like to work in FT8 with my android cell phone.
Is there a manual or basically is it working? And if yes, how?

Kind regards,
Dirk

I do not have your radio, but there is a manual:

Digirig DR-891 Setup Manual – digirig

73 Constrainted

Maybe you didn´t read my question carefully. The normal setup manual is already been readed. But the special question I asked is not answered in this manual.

the 891 is out of my area of expertise but i will answer your question in relation to:

android phone + pota

that’s me;

i use a samsung galaxy s7 active phone with xiegu x5105 and g90 for pota activations.

i use ft8cn android app and it works fine business.
it can change bands and log contacts in addition to simply decoding and encoding ft8.

since my xiegu do no have a usb port, i use the “digirig mobile” unit.
(i have also used a direct audio cable for in/out and another cable from the phone usb jack to xiegu ‘CAT’ port with success)

i have NO experience with the “digirig dr-891” unit which is intended to make use of the ft-891 built in usb port.

so in summary;
digirig mobile + android phone + ft8cn + xiegu 5105/g90 absolutely operational for FT8 POTA activating
(with the caveat of ‘what does my android phone actually support?’ i.e. 3.5mm jack or usb soundcard support)

i’m sorry that’s all i can help with

good luck

Hi Webmonkey,

I’ve just put together the same equipment set and am having issues.

Xiegu G90
Digirig Mobile
Digirig Cables
USB OTG
Samsung J7
Android 9
FT8CN

CAT control works.
It appears the G90 is receiving signal and transmitting.

Could you share with me your FT8CN settings and G90 settings so I can see where this issue is?

Thank you!

Sorry for the delay.

most likely, the Samsung is to blame.

this is a screen of DroidSSTV where i have a soundcard plugged into my Samsung S7 active.
a little less than halfway through, i unplug/remove the usb soundcard/digirig and DroidSSTV continues to decode/rx using the built in microphone.

this is likely what’s happening to FT8CN as it does the same thing to me.

the waterfall looks ‘normal’ but nothing is ever decoded.
the signal ‘colors’ on the waterfall brighten/dim according to volume levels but again, nothing is ever decoded.

allowing FT8CN to run WITHOUT a usb soundcard attached to the Samsung DOES result in decodes.

so obviously, something with that generation of Samsung phones, hates usb soundcards.
the audio is being shifted back and forth/up and down which results in no decodes for FT8CN or DroidPSK or DroidRTTY or, as above, DroidSSTV

the ‘next gen’ Samsung, my wife’s S8 happily uses the digirig all day long without complaint.
:frowning:

again, to be clear;
NOTHING is wrong with the digirig product as this behavior is reproduced consistently with several usb soundcards and the Samsung S7 active.

my solution for using the Samsung is a direct audio cable plugged into the 1/8th inch headset jack OR using the digirig vox cable.
using the Xiegu ‘programming’ cable in the usb port for CAT control.

SO, see if you can get decodes by simply placing the phone, with FT8CN running, next to the radio speaker for a tx/rx cycle or two. i’m certain you’ll get decodes with the ‘acoustic coupled’ method

the digirig vox cable is great for DroidSSTV as that app has no provision for any type of ptt triggering.

(i bought the G90 direct audio cable on ebay. came with a TRRS to twin TRS adapter as well)

good luck

I’ll have to keep this in mind for experimenting with SSTV.

I found the issue.

After much trial and error, I started FT8CN on the Android THEN plugged in the USB-OTG/USB/Digirig/G90. Apparently, when you open the FT8CN app with the phone already connected, the phone cannot receive the data.

I hope this helps someone else.

73, and thank you.
