Help ic-706mkiig

I need some help with this.
I’m new to digital modes and totally clueless about how to hook up the DIGIRIG Mobile. I bought the DIGIRIG and the correct cable interface off Amazon. I’ve verified and re-verified that the cables are connected properly, and I also switched the DIGIRIG to CI-V mode.

However, when I open WSJT-X, I get an error saying:
“Invalid audio output device.”
I also don’t see any rig control happening.

I checked Device Manager, and it shows the Silicon labs cp210X on COM9.

I even double-checked the solder pads on the DIGIRIG board. Based on the documentation I could find, I have it soldered correctly:

  • Two factory bridges disconnected than
  • Middle pad to right pad
  • Right pad to bottom-right pad

This is getting very frustrating. I feel like I’ve followed all the correct steps, but still nothing is working. Please help!

Do you see Digirig audio devices under Device Manager, mmsys.cpl, or WSJT-X pull downs?

You’re off to a good start in that Device Manager is listing it, and you have changed the signaling to CI-V… I have the IC-7000, and it shares the same configuration/settings as the IC706, so there’s hope

Along the lines of what @Constrainted is asking, what device is listed within the WSJT-X audio settings under File, Settings? If there is more than one option it could be you have the wrong one selected.

Windows doesn’t do a great job in naming devices, so there can be some confusion as to which device is which, and it’s easy to select the wrong audio device(s).

I’ve renamed my DigiRig from the generic name assigned by Windows, to something that’s meaningful to me, such as; DigiRig TX and DigiRig RX in the Windows Sound Mixer. Windows doesn’t care what it’s called, but it makes it easier for the user to have something more clear.

I cover the renaming in this other post, if it helps:

Thanks for the help—I finally figured it out! It turned out to be a combination of issues.

First, I was using a VPN to access my ham radio PC. I’ve now learned that’s a no-go because it interferes with the sound card—when you connect via VPN, it can’t access the remote sound card properly.

Second, I had the CI-V control cable plugged into the wrong port on the ICOM 706. There are two ports right next to each other, and I had it in the wrong one.

But all is good now! I just need to learn WSJT-X. At least the Digirig is working like it should. There were just too many issues at once—changing the Digirig mode to CI-V and everything else had me heading down the wrong path.

Thanks again for the heads-up about the sound card—that’s what helped me realize I had a problem identifying the correct ports.

Anyway, 73 and thanks again for the input!
