IC-7000 & Digirig: Radio transmits carrier but no FT8 modulation (No spots on PSKReporter)

Hi folks!
I am quite new to Digirig.
I recently switched from an XGG interface (which I had to replace due to a hardware failure on the connector side).

My Setup:

  • HW: Icom IC-7000, MFJ-949E Manual Tuner, Digirig Mobile (CI-V version).

  • Antenna: 19’ wire (13 AWG) on a Spiderbeam pole + counterpoise.

  • SW: Win 11 Home (25H2) genuine, WSJT-X (rel. 3.0).

  • QTH: Seafront, 80’ ASL, unobstructed view from 110° to 270°.

The Problem:
Operating on 21.074 MHz (FT8) with 70W and 1.15 SWR, I am unable to see any “HEARD” reports on PSKReporter.
Over the last few days, the only station that spotted me was from the Canary Islands (the same station, twice).
Please note that this issue is not limited to 15m (21.074 MHz); I am experiencing the exact same “no spots” situation on 10m and 12m as well, despite having a perfect SWR and seeing 70-80W on my external power meter. This confirms the issue is persistent across all bands.
I have no issues with SSB voice on the same bands; the radio performs perfectly in phone mode, which confirms the RTX itself is working as expected**.**

With my previous interface, I used to see numerous spots and successfully worked DX stations worldwide, even with my simple antenna setup.

Now, it’s a desert!

Since the Digirig is the only new ring in the chain, I suspect either a faulty unit or, more likely, an improper setting on my part.
The radio goes into TX and emits a carrier, but it seems there is no FT8 modulation (blank carrier).

I have tried following the suggested settings on the Digirig website, but I must be missing something.
My PC clock is perfectly synced.

Can you suggest any specific IC-7000 menu settings or Windows sound tweaks to finally get back on the air?

Tnx in advance!

have you switched all the audio devices, on the pc, from the old soundcard interface entry to the new soundcard interface entry in wsjt-x, etc?
doubled checked the new soundcard settings for correct audio in/out etc in the windows sound control panel?

might be something like USB Audio -2 (or similar)

good luck

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your quick reply.

Yes, I’ve checked the settings multiple times. I’ve fully cleared all references to the former interface from both Windows Control Panel and the Volume Mixer.
My current WSJT-X settings are:

  • Input: Microphone (4- USB Audio Device)

  • Output: Speakers (4- USB Audio Device)

My impression is that Digirig is much more sensitive regarding I/O levels compared to my previous XGG interface.

Here are some additional details I missed in my first post:

  • PC ↔ Digirig connection: USB-C to USB-C cable.

  • WSJT-X Settings (Radio Section):

    • Rig: ICOM IC-7000

    • Serial Port: COM6 (Baud: 19200)

    • PTT Method: CAT

    • Mode: Data/Pkt (or USB with Data Mod set to ACC in the radio menu)

    • Split Operation: Fake It

    • CAT/PTT Test: Both OK

One specific detail: In the Windows 11 Volume Mixer, the WSJT-X slider appears “grayed out” and is stuck at 1%. I cannot move it, which likely means the radio is getting almost no audio, resulting in a blank carrier.

Any idea why Windows might be locking the app volume for the Digirig?

Thanks again!

i’ll have to look at my win11 box when i get out to the shack.
it doesn’t currently run ham stuff but it used to.

the current ham stuff box is still on win10

i know there was some discussion about making sure ‘allow to take exclusive control’ was NOT checked. (kind of like when a program opens the comport, no other program can use it until the opening program exits)

other than that, i’d guess admin/user rights of the device
(for a quick test, you could try running wsjt-x as administrator)

good luck
