Ic-706 and FLRIG

Hello all. New to the forum.

I have a new too me ic-706, the OG, not the mark2. I have the corect cables and digirig mobile. Works fantastic with JS8CALL and WSJTX. I have full cat control with both programs and see myself on pskreporter.

My jam are the modes in FLDIGI. But i cant get it to work with FLRIG to work, no mater what setting i select the ptt gets triggered and doesn’t stop untill i iether shut of the tranciever or program.

Any help is appreciated  thanks all.

Consider hamlib interface in latest fldigi release, rather than flrig.

Can fldigi work without flrig? Ive done it in the past with signalink using vox but didnt think it would allow cat control? Ill try updating it. Thanks.

Yes, with hamlib. PTT can be via Digirig COM port RTS (best), CAT control, or VOX (trickiest.)

Please take a look at this thread to get familiar with the config screens:

Ok, sweet, thank you, im halfway there, cat control is working, im decod8ng psk31 on 14.068, just have to get sett8ngs right forr ptt

Band conditions suck lol, not a good time to experiment with a 25 year old tranciever tha5s new too me

Cooking food now, ill mess with it this weekend more. Still cant get ptt to key up. Cat control works natively and im decoding so thats a great start.

Congratulations! Thanks for reporting your progress. Are you pulling PTT with CAT or COM port RTS?

Consider FT4 or FT8. There is so much traffic, and some stations insist on running QRO. I have decoded FT8 on 40m with the dummy load!

In fldigi under hamlib i get it to have cat control and decoding others in psk31 and other modes, just cant get it to key the ptt,

Try either Rig Control → Hamlib → ptt via hamlib command

or

Rig control → Hardware PTT → Com port of Digirig

your choice.

This sounds like RFI. Reduce power, put 1:1 balun on the antenna, RF beads on the USB cable.

Seams like this is the most stable. Still wont key on the ptt. If i use the hardware ptt sett8ngs it keys up and gets stuck. I havent had any problems with WSJTX

Maybe you missed my comments about Radio Frequency Interference (RFI).

I added some snap on ferrite beads to usb cable, at coaxal wall switch i have a choke inline. Ill try swapping cable for one i use on x6100

I hope that works for you. What kind of antenna, and do you have a current balun?

Home made 49:1 unun for 10-40m. Choke is 9 wrapps of rg58 in a 240-43 toroid.

OK! You know your way around antennas. I am sure you are close to a solution now.

Hi @Tmlightner:

You may have this information already, but when I was chasing down RFI etc. it was news to me as to how the number of wraps greatly affects the frequency response, and that to get meaningful effectiveness a person should try to achieve at least 5k of choking impedance in the bandwidth of interest. In some cases I had to put two chokes in series to get a wide enough and effective bandwidth.

You may find that 9 wraps is just scratching the surface, and may not be capturing the bandwidth you’re seeking. I spent over US$1,000 on ferrites learning my lessons (school tax Dad calls it), and most of them are now sitting un-used in a box

Then I found Jim Brown’s (K9YC) “A Ham’s Guide to RFI, Ferrites, Baluns, and Audio Interfacing” to be an excellent resource on building RF chokes et al, and click here if you want the PDF from his website.

Here’s another great read of his to consider with the previous PDF, “A New Choke Cookbook for the 160–10M Bands”, which you can also get the PDF of by clicking here from his website.

Apologies if this is already known to you, but hopefully it can also help others. Anyone want to buy some like new ferrites?

The amount of money I have wasted through the years on amature radio and firearms is appalling. I feel ya lol

I have another choke I use for portable I can try and install. I’m going to try a newer version of flrig also. Thanks for the mention KM4OIA 73
