Icom 706 MKII G

Having trouble with the PTT settings for Winlink Vara HF. The rig control is working as it should.
It will either go and stay in the transmit mode or not transmit period. Anyone have settings for this rig and mode?

Hi:

The first possibility is that you’re getting RFI in the shack. You could rule that out with a dummy load, or if not available, the lowest power setting, and test the PTT again.

Are you using the DigiRig Mobile or Lite, and are you using the CAT CI-V or a COM port with RTS for PTT?

I’ve been running the IC-7000 with the DigiRig Mobile with no issues on HF, so a similar set-up to yours. Currently I have my DigiRig Mobile on my dual band, but I’m willing to swap it back to help you out if need be.

Let me know you’re set-up and I’ll make some suggestions vs covering all the possibilities, before moving my DigiRig back to re-set the settings for my reference.

Thanks for your help.

I’m using the DigiRig Mobile.

Radio selection is Icom 706, icom address 58, and USB.

For Rig Control I use Comm 3. Nothing else. If I choose RTS the rig locks in on transmit.

For PTT the only setting there that I can choose RTS is using Com3 again. I’m warned it may not work.

I’ve used all sorts of other combinations but nothing works as it should. To make the radio transmit as it should.

This is VARA HF Winlink.

Works great on FT8. No issues with settings.

Do you also use PTT by RST in your working WSJT-X configuration?

yes, you do NOT want to have RTS selected in the ‘remote control’ section.
on the digirig mobile, RTS is ONLY connected to the ‘audio’ cable jack for PTT control.
so it will lock tx if enabled in software under the remote control section.

RTS is the correct ptt option for the 706. i don’t have a 706 series anymore but my 736 radios ‘work’ with the same comport for CI-V and PTT.

normally, the next step is shorting the audio cable, digirig end, sleeve to ring2 BUT since you have wsjt-x working, that won’t really help.

what settings are you using in winlink express for radio/ptt and what have you set in vara-hf?

in my vara-hf for winlink express using an icom 736 i have:

icom amateur radios (as the radio ‘type’)
icom address is 00 (even though i know my 736 is 40)
radio control port is 8 and 9600 (obviously you’ve put 3) double check remote control speed
ptt port is 8 and enable RTS

give the generic hamlib entry plus PTT enable RTS a try

Thanks but it didn’t work.

Is WSJT-X or any other application running which may try to use COM3 when you try Vara HF?

73 Constrainted

Nothing else is running.
