I recently purchased a Yaesu RJ-12 DR adapter for a Yaesu FT-2980 with hopes of adding it to my field pack. However I came across a little nuisance that I wasn’t expecting. With the cable plugged into the radio’s audio port, and unplugged at the hand mic (to use for voice) I noticed that my internal speaker no longer functions, even if the digirig is unplugged from a PC and removed from the adapter cable. Is this to be expected? I tested this same scenario with my FT-70, and FT-5D with their respected cable for DR without losing my speaker function.
Well that’s a bummer! Thank you for letting me know AL0R. Do you know if there has been any work around to this? It would be a shame if I’d have to continually tear my pack apart to use the DR
Sure lol. You can pull your radio apart and replace the switched TRS pack to an unswitched. Unfortunately, this necessitates a total PCB removal to accomplish (same issue with an FTM-6000R.)
For radios without a “data jack,” remember that the volume control also affects audio out. I had a user that thought they’d just turn down the speaker when they bridged the speaker out… haha.
You learn something new everyday! Thank you for the response. I didn’t realize the 3.5 port was a physically switch itself, I always thought it knew something was plugged in when there was electrical load or continuity. Thanks again Matt!
There are two types of jacks… switched and unswitched. Switched simply means that when something in inserted, it breaks the previously on board path. OEMs use this, as they assume you are plugging an external speaker in and don’t want the internal speaker to work.
