I just picked up a DigiRig and set it for RS232. I’m running a Kenwood TM-D710 (Non-G model) using Winlink and VaraFM. No matter how I setup PTT in VaraFM, the radio will not PTT. Does anybody have any guidance for setting up the TM-D710 for use with the DigiRig? I’m connected to the rear of the radio control head.
so, your radio has a 6 pin tnc/packet jack on the back of the radio (i think it’s on the back).
this is the jack you want to use for vara fm/hf/sat.
the vara software modem/tnc produces audio tones to send through your radio NOT serial data that is then modulated/demodulated by the radio’s tnc.
the 8 pin jack on the back of the operations panel is a serial data jack.
varafm cant use this. this jack, as listed in the manual, is to be connected to a serial port of a computer that is running a serial terminal program. you type in things like:
c kb0wlf-10 (and the terminal program sends that to the radio, the radio TNC then modulates that over the air then receives the reply, demodulates it and displays on the terminal program)
anyway, vara fm uses the soundcard of the digirig which should be connected to the 6 pin jack on the back of the radio. this jack is audio in/out and ptt. in vara fm you would select the proper usb audio device entry and then select the digirig comport for RTS ptt (the serial config of the digirig is not important for this)
sorry for the long winded reply, probably not even close to what you’re trying to do
good luck

Thanks for the reply and it makes sense. I do have the audio cable connected to the rear of the radio to the digirig. Nothing I do seems to make the radio PTT. I can swap the DigiRig to the TS-480 and it PTT’s with audio, so I know the DigiRig isn’t the problem.
So are you saying I only need one cable from the DigiRig to the TM-D710?
