Mobile Version 1.5 Support

  1. Are the currently sold TRRS cables, for a variety of radios, compatible with version 1.5?
  2. If I bridge the central pad to RTS using a ball of solder, and connect the PTT to the tip, will CAT control be unaffected?
  3. Ultimately, my goal is to use this Digirig Mobile 1.5 with an FT857D and inexpensive HT’s.
  4. My version 1.5 circuit board has no solder bridges at all. What bridges should I make to enable CAT control on my FT857D?

The TRRS cables work with TRS sockets in earlier Digirig Mobile models as long as you don’t use the functionality facilitated by the additional (ring 2) contact. With audio socket this additional signal is PTT.

With Digirig Mobile 1.5 it is possible to route out the PTT signal using a contact of the serial socket as discussed in this post. This however requires custom cable and will disable serial port connection.

Thanks Denis! I have TRS cables to use with an FT857D, and I have TRRS cables to use with a Baofeng/Tidradio and another TRRS cable to use with a VX5R. When I bought them, I didn’t realize the distinction between cables and Digirig versions. Oh well! There are no solder bridges on my version 1.5. What bridges do I need to make to use CAT control with my TRS cables and the FT857D? It appears I should buy a version 1.11 and use my TRRS cables with the VX5R and Tidradio. The 1.11 would allow attenuation and more flexibility. Does that make sense to have 2 dedicated Digirig Mobiles? Thanks, Tim

The port configuration for FT-857D is default so there is no need to make any changes to your Digirig’s solder pads.

The pads now are completely bare. The schematic for 1.5 shows no connection is being made for RTX and TRX. Don’t I need to make those jumpers to enable CAT?

There are existing connections on the side labeled CMOS. They may not be obvious because the copper is covered by the black solder mask (paint). You can confirm the existing connections with the continuity tester.

Yes they are!! Thanks. I finally got CAT working when all baud rates were set correctly. Now tackling audio/data. My FT857D provides fixed audio out (100mv at 600 ohms) which seems to overwhelm the audio input of the digirig. Ver 1.5 does not have an attenuator like later models. Should I build an attenuator into the connector plug?

What level of input does ver 1.5 like to see?

Look for the audio level indicator in the app you use. If not available, try WSJT-X (indicator on the bottom left). When setting Digirig’s sensitivity in the sound settings of the Control Panel, make sure you have AGC box unchecked in recording device properties.
