No audio output from Digirig Mobile

Hi Forum

I have a new Digirig Mobile. I will use it to connect to a Ten Tec Omni C using the Patch in, Patch out, and PTT RCA jacks on the back of the radio. I have a TRRS video cable where tip is white, Ring 1 is red, Ring 2 is yellow, and then the sleeve. My problem is I can’t seem to get audio out of the Digirig. The Digirig is recognized by the computer (i’ve tried with a linux PC, a Rpi4, and a Windows PC). In all cases, i can configure the audio in WSJT-X. I can receive FT-8 signals, and the PTT switch works with the radio when I enable Tx or if I press “Tune”. The software appears to transmit audio, but no one ever replies. I’ve tried plugging headphones into the jack and running speaker-test in Linux to the Digirig just to see if audio comes out of the tip (or ring 1, but I’m expecting tip). However, nothing heard. I’m suspecting something physical in the Digirig itself on the audio out, since I don’t seem to have any software issue, the Digirig is recognized by the PC (Windows, RPi, or Linux) and with the WSJT-X software, I can receive signals, and ptt works. Thoughts on what to do next? I’m thinking about opening the case, but I think it would be better to try another Digirig before doing that. if people think there might be something to fix internally, I am capable of basic surface mount work.

Okay, I think i had this backwards. The tip in the Digirig is the receive path (patch out jack from the Omni in my case). Ring 1 is to the patch in jack, which is the transmit path from the Digirig. I’m not sure why I was able to receive FT-8 with those reversed. I still don’t succeed in making any contacts. I’m wondering if the level expected from an old radio like the Omni at the patch in jack is different than what the Digirig puts out? And I still can’t explain why putting headphone (TRS) into the Digirig jack doesn’t result in audible tones on Ring 1 when I run speaker-test on linux. According to the schematic, C22 is really the only thing between Ring 1 and the CM108 LOL output pin. Has anyone experienced issues like mine? Should my “headphone test” produce an audio output?

Andy,

My recommendation is to first try troubleshooting on a Windows PC. You can then see if the audio is passed to Digirig’s playback device in the control panel then test it at the socket with the headphones, and then finally see if the radio hears it through the cable. Same in reverse with the received audio first seen by the system and then by the user app.
