I ran packet back in the 1980s and 1990s using an IC-2AT and an MFJ TNC, but the packet system here in Indiana collapsed by Y2K and I lost interest. In June a VHF packet digipeater and Winlink gateway went live within easy range, and earlier this month I bought a Digirig Mobile and got it up and running for Winlink, so I’m curious – what’s a simple (and safe) Windows 10 program that will allow me to use Digirig to run packet? Thanks in advance…
Glad you’re familiar with packet operation from back in the day, makes things a whole lot easier to walk through.
so, as you know, the digirig is a soundcard with comport for RTS ptt switching.
it is not a TNC, packet or otherwise.
that means you’ll need:
UZ7HO Soundmodem (you probably already have this if you’re doing winlink packet)
this is a windows program that gives you a 1200baud (among other speeds) ax.25 modem. this includes the capability to switch PTT via said comport.
EasyTerm
there are a few writeups about the soundmodem/easyterm combination.
basically any terminal software that does NOT rely on a ‘real’ serial port can talk to the soundmodem and issue manual commands.
(easyterm attaches to 127.0.0.1:8000 instead of com1/2/3 etc)
other OS choices have similar solutions.
