PTT Again (dire wolf + digirig + APRS-K1 cable + UV5R) on a Mac

Hey folks,

Trying to get my PTT going with digirig and the Baofeng UV5R, but no go.

The radio is not being keyed (I see no transmission light).

I hear digirig generating tones when dire wolf is running via my headphones.

The receive side is working fine, I see APRS messages in Direwolf console.

Questions:

  1. Can I write directly to the tty device on Mac to key the radio? Maybe I have dire wolf misconfigured. I see both /dev/tty.SLAB_USBtoUART and /dev/tty.usbserial-1110. What’s the right one?

  2. I dont have a multimeter handy, but inspecting the connector on the cable I found a scorch mark: https://imgur.com/a/cuIjia6. Should I be concerned?

Is there anything else I might be missing? Drivers?

The issue may be related to the fact that the cable in your picture doesn’t appear to be a Digirig cable:

Here’s how TRRS connectors in Digirig cables look like:

I followed a guide I found online (link) and it never occurred to me to verify the cable suggested :man_facepalming:

Based on this thread it seems to be compatible? Enabling VOX on my UV5R did not work either.

Anyway, is this the cable you would recommend: Baofeng cables kit for Digirig Mobile – digirig ?

Yes, for data modes please use the black cable from this kit.
