Trying to use the digirig mobile to program the FTM-510D, it works with the Yaesu cable, trying with the digirig but it freezes the radio when trying to connect. I was hoping it would work so I don’t end up breaking the connector from frequent use.
I bought the digirig in a kit, so I’m hoping it was the correct model for serial.

Make sure you update the COM port number in the software while switching between the devices.
If the issue persists there’s a possibility that the software is locked for use with a specific brand of the serial device, or the programming requires hardware flow control (use of RTS and CTS signals of the serial port) which is not supported by Digirig.
I made sure the com port was correct, also uninstalled/reinstalled the serial driver, they don’t specify com settings so its using the default in the driver. I’m going to try CHIRP (nm, no profile for this radio) , the software is compatible with not only their cable but the yaesu wires-x/programming cable.
I asked RT-systems about compatibility and they basically don’t know for sure, I suppose I’m wonder what is the expectation of the serial support, I’ve only been messing with the digirig for a day or so, is it com port basically for PTT only with software like winlink?

Yes, the primary purpose for the serial port in Digirig Mobile is for the CAT control in the capable radios and PTT control in everything else. The programming of the radios is a bonus functionality which may or may not work depending on the circumstances.
