Turn off AGC in Windows 11

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to figure out how to shut off AGC in Windows 11 Pro. I have JS8CALL installed on a Panasonic Toughpad and the CAT/S level seems low. From what I understand I need to adjust the input from the digirig to adjust this.

Thaks in advance for any assistance

If it’s CAT as in rig control then this doesn’t involve AGC. If this has to do with the audio then in Windows 11 you’ll find AGC setting like this:

  • Right click the speaker icon in the tray
  • Click on “Sound Settings”
  • Under “Advanced” group click on “More sound settings”, that gets you to the standard sound settings window same across versions of the OS.
  • Switch to “Recording” devices tab
  • Find Digirig entry “USB audio device” or “USB PnP Sound Device” in description. Double click to open the properties
  • You’ll find AGC checkbox under “Other” tab

In windows 11 pro, on a Panasonic FZ-M1 Toughpad I’m doing the following to attempt to shut off AGC
Start menu, settings, system, sound, scroll down to input, then I attempt to shut off AGC on the digirig input but I don’t see that option.

I’m using this with JS8CALL and the CAT/S is too high. After typing this out I’m thinking this might be a radio setting problem in the FT-817. Is it Mike gain that controls the cat signal?

I’m very new to this and trying to figure it all out.

in win10, you can type mmsys.cpl in the program/run/search box.

this will open the ‘good’ audio control panel.
it does in win10 anyway, i don’t have a win11 pc as of yet

then, click the ‘recording’ tab at the top.
then double click the desire audio device.
then click the ‘custom’ tab.
there should be a ‘check box’ labeled AGC

good luck

Slightly related, but I think beneficial for those who are always needing to fiddle with their audio settings - like me

In seeing this post I went looking for a way to create a shortcut for the “‘good’ audio panel” @webmonkey is referencing, which I’m always pulling up. I right-clicked on the desktop and selected “New”, “Shortcut”, and entered; control mmsys.cpl as the “location of the item”.

You can name the shortcut to whatever you wish, and select a different icon if you don’t like the default “mixer” icon.

CAT is the serial remote control communications. changing frequencies, modes, etc
CAT is not the audio input and output, so you can’t ‘adjust’ CAT levels.

if you mean adjusting input/output audio levels on the radio, the MIC gain menu setting won’t change the rear panel connections, only the mic jack.

some radios do have a menu item for input/output levels on the acc/rear jack but it has been a decade since i owned an 817.
