When I try to open a session in Winlink, I keep getting “Unable to open Com 7”. Device Manager shows Com 7 for the Digirig. Winlink Session Setup shows Com 7, 9600, KISS and ACKMODE. Tried changing Com Port in Device Manager and Winlink that didn’t help. Running Windows 10. Digirig connected to a Yaesu FT-2600 DB9 port. When I hit “Start” in the Winlink Session I do see the radio’s XMIT led momentarily flash and I hear digital signals coming off of my radio in my computer. So I think the radio’s connection is good.
This sounds frustrating. This happens to me when I:
- Have another application using the Com port
- Do not have the USB or Digirig cable plugged in
It happens sometimes!

Randy,
Connecting from Winlink to COM port of the interface is something that works with a traditional TNC, but not with the sound card based interfaces like Digirig. You’ll need to configure a separate piece of software that will play the role of so called soft TNC. This will be either soundmodem or varafm/varahf depending on the protocol used by the remote station. Digirig’s COM port is used for CAT control and not the payload.
You can find additional info in the numerous pages/discussions/videos available on the subject.
Thanks Denis @K0TX, I missed the big point of the original post.

I set Soundmodem for TNC instead of Com Port. It works OK now. Thanks! es 73
Thanks for reporting your success!
