WOAD and the ICOM HT (ie ID-50A)

Has anyone been able to get the Digirig lite to work with WOAD in Android? My setup is Galaxy S25 Ultra>Digirig lite> ICOM HT ID-50A.

Yes, that’s pretty common use case.

If you are experiencing difficulties with the setup, please provide specifics: is Digirig detected by the phone? Do you get the decodes? Can you key up the radio for transmit? Do you get picked up by other stations etc.

Well we got it to work with WOAD but we had to modify the ID-50 cable by cutting a lot of the plastic off around the shoulders of the pins. My buddy had a dial calipers handy and the pins were to seating far enough in. We also tried ATAK, APRS droid, and Android JS8Call, but the other three apps were not a success. My buddy had a Baofeng with the Digirig pig tail and it worked on APRS Droid and JS8Call. Getting back to ATAK it would key the ID-50 and send audio but none of our devices would recv the chat messages.

Let’s clarify term “devices” and make distinction between audio and decoded messages:

  • your station keys up, but does the remote stations hear the audio from your station?
  • can they decode your audio into the messages?
  • does your station receive the audio response from the remote station?
  • does your station decode the received audio?

In regards to ATAK using the HAMMER plug-in (devices I am referring to are the Android phones, one is a Samsung S25 Ultra and the other is a Motorola), the phones key the radio and TX audio, hearing audio via 3rd radio on freq. Neither side is decoding chat messages.

Android JS8Call I am going to wait. I think there are still a lot of bugs. I uninstalled it because it was drawing down phone battery when not in use.

APRSDroid I will have to do some more research, lots of different versions. There is also a “improved version”

Thanks for your help

Yeah, sounds like a software issue if you got it working on the same hardware with a different app (eg WOAD).
