FT-450D - Help!

G’day everyone,

Purchased the DRMOB-RS232 and TS-480 Cable set which I understand are the correct cables for the Yaesu FT450D.

Installed everything per the information available, the Digirig installed as 2 Com ports, 1 enhanced and 1 regular and a USB sound device.

Installed WSJT-X and set it up following advice I had seen and read, Cat = the enhanced port number, Baud 38400 (same on rig) and I left all the handshaking to default and the control lines unforced.

PTT to Cat on the Standard Cat port address, Mode to Data/Pkt and split to Fake it.

I could get a Green Test Cat - it would change the rig to data mode and Tx would come on and stay on (though I don’t think it was actually transmitting anything) so I pressed OK and it seemed happy enough and was decoding packets.

If I attempted to reply to a CQ or call CQ or send a Tune nothing would Tx and more often than not it would throw an error and then I’d chase my tail trying different setup options without making any further progress.

Had enough, shut down and gave it a miss for a day or 2, went back and found that I no longer have an Enhanced Serial Port in device manager just a Com Port and of course the USB Audio device.

Tried using the 1 Port, no progress, and searched for a solution to why I no longer had 2 Com Ports. Most common answer was the drivers, so uninstalled and reinstalled without success.

Could someone who has the FT-450D working with Cat control and PTT please share their settings with me?

Moving on, read the posts about others having problems with the FT-450D, nothing leapt out at me as being the same or similar to the problems I’m having, but did read about the connectors so checked their continuity and that the connections were correct. They check out so I’ve hit the wall again.

This was the same result on 2 separate Windows PC (1 Win7 and 1 Win11) and even tried a Mint Linux laptop without success.

Another question I have, in WSJT-X, RTS is an option for PTT. Is this really the RTS pin on the RS-232 or is the PTT pin on the soundcard the actual mechanism for PTT and is just called RTS by convention?

Any and all help and advice gratefully accepted!

this is the only part i can help with

selecting RTS and supplying a comport #, is the actual RTS line of the digirig comport.
(the RTS and DTR lines are not included in the ‘remote control/cat/ci-v’ cable of the digirig mobile)
this ptt method (of the digirig mobile) is connected to the PTT ‘line’ in the digirig to radio AUDIO cable. (the cable that plugs into the audio jack of the digrig contains audio in/out and ptt (a line that goes to ground))

good luck

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply - that aligns with my thoughts that the PTT pin on the 6 pin mini din was “RTS” in this circumstance.

Still none the wiser on why the CAT is acting the way it is…

Cheers,

Audio + PTT should get you on the air. As far as optional CAT control goes, please check out this discussion, there are recommendations for transceiver and software settings there:
